WARD and Chowen, Tavistock auctioneers held a farm sale of organic cattle and farm machinery at Boyton Farm, Whitchurch, on behalf of J and H Wallace. A large contingent of buyers were present with the majority of the cattle being unusual breeds and most of the machinery relatively new and in good condition. In the cattle ring, prices topped at £765 for a 28 month old Lincoln Red x steer. Cows with calves sold to £600 for a 4 year old Welsh Black x cow with her 5 month old Lincoln Red x heifer calf at foot; and in calf heifer sold to £510 for a two and a half year old Lincoln Red. Farm machinery sold to £19,500 for a Valtra 6650 tractor with only 1,800 hours, a Meilleux MX100 loader, floating air suspension and fully automatic. Other machinery sold for the vendors were £4,300 for a Rolland 20? cattle trailer; £2,650 for 20? AW Bale trailer; £2,000 for a Hispec 800 engineering dungspreader; £1,020 for a complete Bateman sheep handling unit; £1,000 for a Stoll Westmac rower up and £1,100 for a IAE steel cattle crush. A number of introduced lots on behalf of local farmers were sold which included £2,150 for a Deutz Fahr 330 2WD tractor; £1,750 for a MF165 1976 tractor, £1,400 for a Honda 330 2003 quad bike and £860 for a Bomford Farmtrim hedgetrimmer.
