East Devon Senior Cup
Okehampton Argyle 0
Newtown 0
(3-4 penalties aet)
ANOTHER disappointing result for Okehampton, but there seems to be a glimmer of light at the tunnel.
It was an even game with both sides creating chances, but a lack of firepower up front for Argyle is starting to tell.
Okehampton had at least half a dozen clear chances to score but a lack of confidence in front of goal meant they were wasted.
With the game ending 0-0 after extra time it was down to the lottery of
Penalties, probably the most unfair way of sorting out any cup tie especially for the players who miss then think they cost the side the game.
The score was tied 3-3 after five penalties and went into sudden death and unfortunately for Okehampton they lost when Kevin Gill's penalty went wide of the post. Despite being the best player on the field he took the miss very hard.
The defence was fairly solid with Ian King sitting just in front of the back three of Graham Soby, Michael Vernon and Kevin Gill. All four played well
and kept keeper Richard Bailey well protected. Although at times they were caught ball-watching, they were quick enough to recover and make their tackles.
The whole of the midfield played well with Maddax, Agnew, Yip and Chapman battling well and not giving the opposition too much time. Up front, Nicky Pollard was as industrious as ever, as was Ian Gill who is on the long road to full fitness follow a bad knee injury this time last year.
Two new faces came on as substitutes, Daniel Johnson and Martyn
Carver, and played well. Both deserve a longer run in the side and hopefully this will happen.
This weekend Okehampton Argyle first team return to league action against Pinhoe. kick-off 3pm. players to be at the clubhouse by 2pm.
