POLICE are appealing for information after a pony was hit by a vehicle and left with horrendous injuries on Dartmoor last Saturday (December 10).
The incident occurred during the hours of darkness at Cadover Bridge. The pony, which was with its foal, was struck from the rear by the vehicle.
It was not reported to the police and the pony was left suffering until it was found by a farmer a short distance away from the impact. The animal had to be put down.
'Due to the pony's injuries there must have been significant damage to the vehicle involved,' said PC Kathy Veale.
'Because the incident was not reported the pony was left suffering and the owner left trying to find the dead pony's foal to check on its welfare.
'The farmer will be unable to claim any compensation for the loss of this animal unless the vehicle driver involved is located.'
The officer is reminding drivers to take care when driving across Dartmoor as there are many wild animals roaming freely and to reduce their speed accordingly to suit the weather conditions.
'Over recent weeks two black cows have been killed by vehicles during the hours of darkness on the Dousland and Postbridge roads,' added the officer.
'Drivers must ensure that they report any incidents to the police so checks can be made on their safety, the owner of the animal can be contacted and consideration for the welfare of the animal can be made.'
If anyone has any details regarding the above incident please can they contact with local PC Veale at Tavistock Police Station on 101.
