DARTMOOR National Park officials have this week said 'stupid' speeds of almost 150mph are being recorded on Dartmoor's roads — despite the 40mph limit. The startling figure came to light last Tuesday, after a pony was killed by an early morning hit and run driver at Haytor. The only clue found at the scene was a black wing mirror. Farmer Laura Colwill and her family were left to haul the bloodied carcass into the back of their Land Rover and carry it off for rendering. With more than 80 ponies, sheep and cattle killed on the moor's road last year, it is a clear-up operation commoners are used to but which they also find upsetting. 'We've had several ponies killed before,' she said. 'The worst thing is no-one lets you know, you just find them by the roadside like this. 'People haven't got the guts to admit what's happened. 'Sometimes they're left injured and wander off which means we have to go and find them. 'Even though ponies aren't valuable they're still stock and you care about them. Why can't people just slow down?' Carla McKechnie is a protection officer with the Dartmoor Livestock Protection Society (DLPS) and member of the Commoners' Council. She said: 'The Haytor area is generally not too bad but we have a serious problem on the B3212 Princetown to Dousland and Tavistock to Princetown road. 'Last year we had more than 80 dead sheep, ponies and cattle. 'We're talking to MPs about the problem and there needs to be a greater enforcement of the limit. 'Fencing off the moor has been talked about but there are really large areas to cover and not everyone wants that anyway. 'I go out many a time in the middle of the night to find a badly injured animal in the road and have to deal with. 'It's not only upsetting but there are the costs involved too and of course there's a real risk of injury for those in the speeding vehicles.' Andrew Watson, recreation and access officer for Dartmoor National Park Authority, said: 'We do have speed advisor signs at three locations on the moor and they do have some effect when they flash up. 'They also log people's speeds so we can see where the problem is persistent and work with the DLPS and police to try and resolve it. 'Sadly the record is 148mph near the Warren House Inn. That's just stupid.'
