A VACANCY representing Tavistock North on the town council has arisen after the resignation of Cllr Colin Rogers — and with a number of key projects planned for the town in its future people with enthusiasm are sought.
Members of the town council noted the resignation of Cllr Rogers at its meeting on Wednesday, June 21 and considered arrangement in respect of the vacancy. Councillors decided to advertise the post on June 23 and allow 14 working days for ten people, who must be on the electoral register and live in the north ward, to submit a request to the returning officer of the borough council for an election to be held.
At the last by-election the council took a decision not to ask for polling cards to be sent out as it was felt that with social media, general advertisements, and the candidates’ campaign literature, the expenditure on polling cards was not justified.
But following frustration from the public over lack of polling cards the authority has assured the public that every resident in the north ward will receive a polling card if an election is called.
Tavistock mayor Philip Sanders said: ‘There are a significant number of key projects currently being taken forward by the town council and it is important that the residents are properly represented over the next two years. I would therefore encourage anyone who has some time to spare and who cares for the town and its future to put themselves forward for election.
‘There is much to be done and we need people with both ideas and enthusiasm.’
