MEBYON Kernow — the party for Cornwall — has written to Plymouth City Council to urge the authority to re-consider the massive increase in mooring charges for the River Tamar as the cross border dispute intensifies.
In the letter, the deputy leader of the party and Callington Cornwall Councillor and Portreeve, Andrew Long, urged a rethink.
In the letter he said: ‘It is not acceptable in these times when, despite central government’s promise that “things are getting better” that you consider imposing a 250 percent increase on people who cannot go anywhere else. These waters are not in the ownership of Plymouth City Council but are, by statute, Cornish waters up to the mean high tide on the eastern bank and so it is questionable that you can legally impose these mooring charges but taking that aside, where is the consultation with Cornwall Council, Saltash Town Council and, even more importantly, the boat owners who are going to be so badly affected by this savage increase?
