A SERIES of ‘drop-in’ events for the public to discuss West Devon Borough Council’s potential merger with South Hams has been announced.

The proposal to merge both councils has been put forward to help address the combined £1.9-million gap in finances brought about by successive reductions in central government funding since 2010.

Since 2007, the councils have been working together, when they first shared a chief executive and then began sharing a workforce.

Although now operating a fully shared service, the political structures have been kept separate, with members being elected to each council separately.

The drop-in events will allow members of the public to talk to councillors about the proposal, ask questions, find out more information and fill in a consultation survey.

The dates for West Devon drop-in events are as follows:

• Wednesday, September 6, Okehampton, Waitrose, 3pm to 7pm.

• Saturday, September 9, Bere Alston, Saturday market, 10.30am to 2pm.

•Saturday, September 9, Tavistock, farmers’ market, 9am to 2pm.

•Saturday, September 9, Yelverton, St Paul’s Church Hall, 9am to 12.30pm.

• Monday, September 11, Chagford, Endecott House, 4pm to 8pm.
