POLICE in Tavistock are warning youngsters of the consequences faced when shoplifting in the town.
Officers have to deal with a number of shoplifters every week, and say there has been a noticeable rise in the number of teenage girls being caught shoplifting make-up and similar items in Tavistock recently.
Police last week had to deal formally with three incidents.
Sgt Dave Anning, at Tavistock Police Station, said: 'We deal with shoplifters of all ages, but in light of this trend, I'd like to aim this message at this particular group.
'Aside from the fact that shoplifting is wrong, I would like to remind you that when you get caught shoplifting your parents will be informed if you are under 18. Even if you are over 18, if you are living at home they may still find out because we have a power to come and search your home for evidence of similar offences.
'This is all in addition to being challenged and detained by shop staff in front of the public and opening up the potential for a criminal record that will prevent you from entering certain professions.
'So, before you pick that item up, consider very carefully what you are doing.'
