A CRACKDOWN on thoughtless drivers has been mounted by police to tackle the rising number of accidents on Devon and Cornwall's roads.

Bad drivers in West Devon could fall foul of the high visibility patrols over the Christmas period. The initiative will concentrate on hotspots where accidents are caused by anti-social drivers

Operation Ostinato will target aggressive overtaking, excessive noise from car stereos and bad parking, as well as serious offences such as road rage and drink-driving. The initiative has been launched in response to an increase in the number of serious injury accidents across roads in the force area.

Chief Insp Ian Aspinal, head of road policing, said: 'Officers will be observing the behaviour of drivers and giving educational advice but, where necessary, taking robust enforcement action.'

Evidence suggests that accidents are more likely to happen at early evening and at pub closing times, but the worst time for road traffic accidents, according to police statistics, is between noon and 3pm, Thursday to Saturday.

Operation Ostinato began on Monday and will run throughout the Christmas period, in conjunction with the police's campaign to combat drink-driving.
