A TAVISTOCK woman is appealing for motorists to slow down after her young son was injured crossing the Whitchurch Road at the weekend.

Heather Dunne's nine year old son Luke was crossing the road near Church Lea — just outside the occasional 20mph zone by Whitchurch primary school — on his scooter at noon on Saturday, January 6.

'He was half way across when he was knocked off his scooter by a car,' she alleged. 'The children said the car was going fast. Luke would only have had to be a foot the other way and he might not have been here today.'

The boy was taken to hospital by his mother and later discharged with bruising to his foot, plus other cuts and bruises.

'I believe if the car had been going at 30mph it would have been able to stop before it hit him,' she said. 'The driver stopped afterwards, but he didn't even get out of his car. He did the bare minimum. He asked Luke if he was okay and he, of course, said yes because he was in shock.'

Mrs Dunne said traffic often sped up when it topped the brow of the hill.

'The residents have asked for a speed hump, but they put flashing lights in instead. Speed humps would have worked all day every day, morning, noon and night, not just at school times,' she said.

The police are appealing for witnesses to the alleged incident and describe the car as dark, possibly a Mercedes. The driver is described as between 35 and 45, balding.
