A REQUEST to the highways department to paint single yellow lines along both sides of a Tavistock street to improve safety has been issued by police. Dave Chapple, the town?s traffic warden, said there had been at least two accidents to his knowledge in the Ford Street area, between the junction at Spring Hill and further down the road, towards Drake Stores. Mr Chapple said traffic had become very congested in the area, due to drivers parking their cars along the left hand side of the road in the Callington direction. He and Sgt Ian Woods have issued the request to Devon County Council?s highways department in an attempt to address the issue. Mr Chapple said the safety situation regarding the new mini roundabout by Tavistock Cemetery had now eased, with drivers mainly driving round the roundabout, instead of over it. But he stressed that, contrary to reports, he does not have the power to take action with drivers in these instances. ?I can?t stop vehicles for that ? that?s a police matter,? he said.
