HAVING travelled to Paignton last week and suffered a heavy defeat in which Tavistock squash team only gained four points, they were still looking for their first win in this half of the season.
The home match against Newton Abbot got under way with Peter Walsh (No 5) and Colin Grice (No 3) providing convincing wins. Peter won comfortably 3-0. The second of those games went to 10-8 but Peter?s accurate reverse wall shots proved too much for his opponent.
Colin Grice lost his first game despite being ahead initially to a
hardworking opponent. Interval advice from Peter Walshe to step up the pace of the game and keep his opponent at the back of the court put Colin on the right track. The Newton Abbot player tired quickly giving Colin a 3-1 win.
Stuart Cox (No 4) provided the only five-game match of the evening. Games alternated between both players. Sadly the fifth was not the same standard as the previous games. The Newton Abbot player seemed to lose his rhythm and Stuart won 9-1.
Tim Wallis (No 2) regained his deft touch and ability to vary his game. His opponent only gained three points in the whole match. Tim needed this win, having lost his last two matches.
The remaining match between the No1 players found Andy Gauler against another canny, quality opponent. Despite Andy?s best efforts unforced errors prevented him coming close to taking a game.
The evening?s play saw Tavistock gain 17 points which should keep them mid-table.
