TAVISTOCK Post Office staff, who are collecting items to send to the troops involved in the war in Iraq, say the response from customers has been ?super?.

Mary Matthews, a postal officer, saw a request on television for shoeboxes of items to be sent to the forces and decided to support the idea at work.

She said: ?It was going to be for the staff only, but I asked my boss if we could ask the customers, and it?s just taken off ? it?s snowballed.?

A box has been placed in the post office for people to place items in. ?As much as we can get, we will send out,? said Mary. ?Each shoebox will have a note in it saying it is from the customers and staff of Tavistock Post Office.?

Items which are being requested include toiletries, wet wipes, coffee, tea, biscuits, sweets and cup-a-soups. Some of the boxes will be marked for female members. Each box will hold up to two kilos of items.

Mary said she was obtaining sponsorship for the postage.

As boxes have to be addressed to individuals, Mary said she had been asking local people with relatives in the forces to provide names who would then be asked to distribute the items.
