THE resurrection of a 100-year-old event saw the people of North Tawton recapture the party spirit of the 2012 Olympic and Jubilee summer.

The bank holiday weekend saw the launch of the Nanny Knight's Revel celebrations. The event saw the resurrection of a lost tradition in the town, brought back to recreate the wonderful community spirit of 2012.

The Revels celebrations date back around 100 years, originally organised to celebrate the safe return of Nanny Knight, an old lady from North Tawton who had gone missing. The townsfolk searched high and low, and Nanny Knight was eventually found safe and well, asleep in a cornfield. Her family were so pleased to have her home they organised a celebration, the Nanny Knight's Revels.

As part of the celebrations, North Tawton Rugby Club hosted a marquee produce and craft show, and a sports day, while the Memorial Park hosted a fun day with games and activities. The football club hosted a football tournament as part of the Revels, and pubs and local people organised events to make the celebrations last ten days in total.

Nigel Davies, chair of the organising committee, said: 'The whole event went very well, and with the events in the park and rugby club, we couldn't have asked for them to go any better.

'There were plenty of people who came along and enjoyed themselves, from pre-school children running in races to older people sitting at the top of the park and watching everything.

'I spoke to one old chap who remembers the original revels, and he said he felt the spirit of the event had been resurrected, which is what we wanted.'

The committee are hoping to be able to organise similar events for next year.
