AFTER the absolutely appalling waste of £130,000 on the so called refurbishment of the St James' Chapel area of the town are residents happy about what is happening in Okehampton? Perhaps we ought to be questioning why are we letting our elected representatives get away with it?

OK so there's not much we can do about St James' area, but what about the plans for the area around the post office and Fairplace and the sports facilities in Simmons Park?

There have recently been two public meetings arranged by the mayor — where are you all? — There are not many residents at these meetings.

The last meeting at the Charter Hall last Thursday was attended by the West Devon Borough Council officer, who must now think that the people of Okehampton don't care about their town — there weren't many people there, probably 50 — thousands of people live in Okehampton — why can't they spare a couple of hours and attend these meetings — information should be available from the town hall for any future ones.

Please, please show some support for the mayor — from my viewpoint she doesn't get too much support from some of her fellow councillors. We must be seen to be interested in what is taking place in our town and make our voices heard before it is too late and Okehampton is ruined by outsiders who don't know any better. So get down to the town hall and ask when the next public meeting is!

PS Does anyone know who Okehampton 2000 is? Are the residents of Okehampton aware of this forum? and if not why — perhaps they ought to publicise themselves!
