JUST who are these vandals hell bent on demolishing our Jubilee Hall? Not locals, that's for sure. More than likely they are newcomers to the town — who would set themselves up as our mentors. They may be surprised to learn that some of us, a silent majority who will remain silent no longer, are strongly attached to our Jubilee Hall just as it stands. Well, all right, maybe the old lady does need a bit of repair and updating, what old building doesn't? But the cost would be a mere fraction of the vast sums of money being talked about to fund a total rebuild, quite apart from such drastic action being unnecessary. There is another point which should be borne in mind. Like many other country towns, Chagford is made up of a patchwork of buildings of many differing styles and periods, which have blended in with each other with the passage of time. Just take a look around at the parish church, the Three Crowns, the market place and the building that used to be Moorlands Hotel, all of them good examples of their ages. And so is our Jubilee Hall, built in 1936 to celebrate the coronation of King George VI, and just as much a part of the patchwork as any other. Please leave it alone.
