I REFER to the letter from Mr Macklin (June 2) re speeding. For some years we have been trying to get action on the Vale Down stretch of the A386. The council quote lack of money or the National Park as the reason for no further action. The police quote ?lack of resources? but refuse to consider the civilian scheme pioneered successfully by Avon and Somerset and now adopted by Cheshire and one of the Kent forces. A retiring Devon and Cornwall police officer told me some years ago nearly all their equipment was faulty. When the type was quoted by Avon and Somerset they laughed and said they had given it up ?years ago?. Our parish council report in Blackdown News that Devon Highways have said there will be no money for improvement at one junction without a fatality. All we ask as a first step is that the police enforce the speed limit of 40mph. A J Wroath Springers Vale Down Lydford
