TAVISTOCK'S community bands entertained shoppers and stall holders at the Artist's Market in Bedford Square at the weekend.

The bands playing were Tavistock wind band Blowzone, saxophone ensemble Saxophonics, clarinet ensemble Clarinet Caboodle and flute ensemble Flute Cocktail.

All the bands are community bands and have members ranging in age from children to the retired.

The music played covered just about every genre.

Both Blowzone and Saxophonics played music from the Pirates of the Carribean movies, which proved to be a popular choice with their audiences.

Other highlights included Blowzone's traditional party-piece The Muppets theme tune, as well as Flute Cocktail playing Wallace and Gromit and Clarinet Cocktail playing Teddy Bear's Picnic.

The bands also played popular songs, including tunes from the Beatles, John Lennon, Abba, Ricky Martin and Sing! from the Queen's Jubilee.

The bands are always keen to welcome new members.

Although some playing experience in necessary before joining, it is not necessary to have passed any exams. Playing in a group is a great way to increase confidence and skills and the bands are all friendly with an emphasis on enjoyment.

All four bands are keen to hear from new woodwind players, but Blowzone would particularly like to hear from brass players, especially trumpet, trombone, French Horn and tuba.

Blowzone's next outing is at the Carnival Fun Day in Tavistock Meadows on July 14 from 1.30pm to 4pm.

Blowzone is also joining Tavistock's Stannary Brass Band for a Tavistock Carnival concert at St Eustachius' Church on July 17 from 7.30pm.

Flute Cocktail will be playing a concert in June with the Saxophonics as their guests.
