HALF-term sessions were run for the first time in February by the new Princetown and Postbridge Opportunity for Play (POP) project.

The project, run by High Moorland Community Action, provides free 'play' sessions for 8 to 19-year-olds from Princetown, Postbridge and surrounding areas.

A survey in January identified what children were interested in —activities now being offered include team games, orienteering, moor exploration and map reading, jewellery and fabric painting.

Twenty-five children aged 8 to 18 took part in the sessions.

Ezra Rickman, 10, who took part in the moor explorations session, said: 'I have had a good time with my friends, exploring the moor around Princetown.'

Ten children participating in the mountain biking session were joined by PC Dave Pickles and PCSO Mark Canvin.

PC Pickles said: 'We really welcome this initiative. I know from my schooldays that the local outdoor pursuits club changed my life and got me interested in lots of different activities.

'I hope that the POP project, with all the exciting free opportunities they are offering, does the same for the children of Princetown and Postbridge.'

The project is for three years and is funded by the Big Lottery Fund and West Devon Borough Council. The next free sessions will be delivered during the Easter holidays and include caving, archery, mountain biking as well as more arts related sessions.
