HATHERLEIGH Primary School's lollipop lady is to have her years of dedicated work recognised at a special ceremony in Exeter next week, in honour of her astonishing 25 years of service.

Mary Sanders is being given a platinum long service award by Devon County Council for 25 years spent helping children cross the road.

Linda Mitchell, headteacher at Hatherleigh, said: 'She's been in the job a really long time and she has a real concern for the children in her care.

'She not only shows them across the road, she will point out various hazards — she's fantastic.'

Mrs Mitchell said Mary is included in the school's book of achievement which was presented to her at a school assembly recently.

'She's very much part of the community and highly valued — I don't know how we would ever replace her,' said Mrs Mitchell.

Mary will be among 19 school crossing patrol men and women who will be presented with long service awards on Wednesday July 24 by Cllr Mary Strudwick, Devon County Council chairman.

Cllr Strudwick said: 'On behalf of Devon County Council I wish to thank the patrols for their hard work and dedication and for turning out, whatever the weather, to ensure thousands of Devon schoolchildren get to and from school safely.

'The contribution and commitment shown by each individual school crossing patrol is remarkable and I am delighted to play a part in recognising their achievements.'
