A PROJECT to erect special blue plaques on notable Tavistock buildings has received the thumbs up from town councillors, who agreed to make a start on the scheme.

The council heard there was a list of some 50 buildings in the town which merited a blue plaque, which would include a brief description of the site and the town crest.

Cllr Norma Woodcock said: ?I would like to suggest we make a start on these. They do tie in with the town walks that have already been provided ? I?d like to suggest we plan a five-year programme and start with perhaps eight in the next year.?

Town clerk Roger Howard said a single planning application was sufficient to cover the series of plaques.

Councillors asked the clerk to obtain design and cost options from manufacturers for suitable blue plaques ? it was agreed that £2,000 should be made available from reserves to the project under way, with the aim of completing ten plaques a year.

Members also agreed to work with Tavistock Forward on a project to replace the seven signs on entrances to the town. The committee felt the signs should include a welcome to the town, its twinned towns of Celle and Pontivy and the phrase, ?historic market town?.

The new signs are likely to cost around £30,000 overall ? investigations into likely sources of funding are to be made.
