TWO plaques offering a lifeline to those in desperate need have been put up on Meldon Viaduct. The plaques, bearing the number of Exeter, Mid and East Devon Samaritans, have been put up to remind people, who are in the depth of despair and suicidal, that they are not alone. The plaques were put in place after the body of a young man, who had taken his own life by jumping off the viaduct, was found by a married couple. The couple approached the Samaritans to see if a plaque, bearing the Samaritans telephone number, could be put on the bridge. Working together, the director of Exeter, Mid and East Devon Samaritans Mrs Monika Bright, the trustees of the viaduct, their representative at Exeter County Hall and English Heritage, have now honoured that request. If you are in need of help and want someone to talk to, the Samaritans helpline is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 08457 909090. The Exeter branch number is 01392 411711.
