THERE has been much discussion about the planter units in Bedford Square. So let me explain: for the benefit of Ann Keelan (Letters, August 9) who I feel is desperately ill-informed on both issues on which she commented? some fundamentals concerning this project. This initiative has not been the remit of Tavistock Town Council. The planters have been organised by Tavistock and District Chamber of Commerce. Members of the chamber (who, by the way are not paid) endeavour to orchestrate initiatives which promote the retail and commercial vitality of the town. So please, give the council a break! It is through the generous support of many local businesses, and Tavistock Town Council, that these planters have been funded. The positioning of the planters ? in their rather ?regimental? format ? is to allow the square to function without continual adjustment of the planters. The intention wasn?t for the planters to resemble Daleks! Unfortunately (mainly due to a lack of sun!), the edges of the tiered frameworks haven?t yet been camouflaged by the natural growth of the plants. Acknowledging this, we have now added more trailing plants, which we hope will cover the edges and make their form less obvious. We have received a tremendous number of positive comments regarding the planters in Bedford Square. Furthermore, these planters add colour and form which replace a previously barren concrete vista. This is a new project, and all concerned will learn lessons for the future. I feel it is also important to acknowledge the significant effort and energy expended in organising this entire initiative. Equally the staunch dedication of those individuals ? unpaid and non-council employees ? who maintain, repair and water these planters is something that should be recognised, and their sense of civic duty applauded. And incidentally, for anyone who may feel CCTV cameras are ?preposterous? and not required in our town: I would suggest that they spend a few moments listening to the appalling catalogue of ongoing anti-social behaviour that blights the lives of local town residents living adjacent to Bedford Square. Within the chamber, we prefer to be part of the solution - rather than part of the problem. Nigel Eadie Chairman Tavistock and District Chamber of Commerce
