A SPECIAL event aimed specifically at carers in the Tavistock area was held in the Ordulph Arms last week.
The carers' day was organised by South Hams and West Devon Primary Care Trust together with West Devon Social Services, when carers learned more about the work of the South Devon Carers Consortium.
Justin Haden, of the consortium, outlined government and local plans to consult, support and involve carers. He also gave information about the Carers Plan and services funded by the Carers Grant.
Rowena Lane of West Devon Social Services explained the role of carer support workers, who are now based in all GP surgeries in Tavistock and Bere Alston.
She said these workers are available to carers to provide information, support and advice and can visit people at home or in the doctors' surgeries.
Steve Shrill of Youthwize also gave a presentation on his work in supporting young workers under the age of 18.
The morning finished with a question and answer session and ended with a buffet lunch.
A similar event has been planned for February, in order to give carers in the borough a chance to have their say in the joint agency planning for services due to take place next year.
