A DEVELOPMENT for 77 houses has been proposed by building company Redrow on land near Anderton Lane in Whitchurch.

Residents in the Whitchurch Road and Tiddy Brook areas received a letter on November 5 announcing the company’s plans to build houses on the undeveloped field between Tiddy Brook Meadows and Whitchurch Road, extending back to Whitchurch Primary School.

The letter stated that the proposed development was for 77 dwellings — 54 open market and 23 affordable dwellings to meet the identified local needs.

In addition, new infrastructure will be constructed along Anderton Lane to improve access for both existing and prospective residents access along with a flood alleviation scheme to make ‘significant improvements’ to the surrounding areas.

In 2014, Redrow’s planning application to build 120 homes at this location saw 140 objections from nearby residents who said they were concerned about infrastructure pressures such as additional traffic in Anderton Lane and more pupils at Whitchurch Primary School.

At the time, one local resident said: ‘A large number of residents in the Whitchurch and Tavistock area are against the Redrow development, which would be sited on the last remaining attractive green valley off Anderton Lane.

‘It is an unwanted and unnecessary development, outside the settlement boundary.’

After receiving a letter, Dr Ian Goodfellow, a Whitchurch Road resident, said: ‘There is a huge amount of opposition to this development and people are outraged that this has come up again after previous plans had been fully scrutinised and rejected.

‘This is not just a matter for Tiddy Brook and Whitchurch Road residents, it’s a matter for the whole town.’

A public consultation to establish people’s concerns and ways to allieviate issues was held yesterday (Thursday).

A representative from Redrow Homes West Country said: ‘Following the previous planning application submitted in 2014 in relation to the site next to Tiddy Brook Meadows in Tavistock, we are currently re-evaluating a scheme in order to address the reasons for refusal on the previous application.

‘We are committed to creating thriving communities and part of this is working alongside those communities to understand their views and opinions on potential development.

‘We will be holding the pre-application consultation with neighbouring residents to gather their thoughts on a future proposal.’
