SINCE the successful purchase, by the town council, of the Guildhall complex I, in my role of mayor of the town, have been asked many times what has the council got planned for the buildings? When investigating exactly what could be achieved, the council was always seeking a use that was viable in the long term, appropriate for an iconic Grade II* building, which is on the English Heritage 'Heritage at Risk Register' and located at the heart of our great town. It soon became clear that the way forward was to adopt a versatile approach, working with partners to provide wide-ranging opportunities for public sector, not for profit and voluntary organisations to deliver services in a co-ordinated way. Under the plan, public and partner services will be delivered through a 'one stop shop' giving town centre access to information and help on a wide range of services. The proposal also includes a World Heritage Site gateway centre and police and magistrates' museum. The gateway centre will enable many more people to appreciate Tavistock's significant contribution to the cultural 'mining' landscape of Cornwall and West Devon. A great achievement, I believe, will be open access to the courtroom, cells and Trowte's House. I believe we have an excellent proposal to bring the Guildhall complex back into public use. I am, however, realistic and know that Tavistock Town Council needs the support of many partners to bring the plan to fruition. The council has made an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a significant proportion of the overall estimated cost of the scheme. The bid for funding is supported by our partner organisations so it is with great hope that I look forward to the not too distant future, when residents of Tavistock and visitors to the town will see the results of of significant work to both the outside and inside of these historic buildings.
Cllr Harry Smith Tavistock Town Mayor
