ROAD names for a future housing development in Tavistock have been put forward for consideration by Tavistock Town Council.
Species of geese names had been suggested by the developer of the site at Butcher Park Hill but these were rejected by members of the town council’s development management and licensing committee which met in August.
Councillors felt the suggestions — Embden Grange, Cotton Patch, Greyback, Landes, Lionhead, Obroshino, Romny and Tufted Roman — had no relevance to Tavistock and implied that the town was defined by a single fair event — Goose Fair — which is only held on one day, once a year.
The names of geese listed were also not recognised as British breeds by the Poultry Club of Great Britain.
It is a legal requirement that the local ward members of the town council and the Royal Mail are consulted regarding new street names and that any objections are fully substantiated and made within a strict time-frame.
Historically the town council has used names of honoured burgesses when naming roads, such as Pinder Court and Philpott Lane, usually posthumously, although there had been exceptions.
Members said that there were more significant historic influences on the development of the town which itwould be more appropriate to refer to — if a local theme was being developed.
Suggestions included the Abbey, Dukes of Bedford and other places within the World Heritage Site, or the town’s agricultural heritage. At the September meeting of the development management and licensing committee, councillors suggested: vicars; teachers in Tavistock; local authors; areas local to Butcher Park Hill; former chairpeople of the council and Tavistock MPs.
As Tavistock is the Eastern Gateway to the Unesco Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site councillors decided that the mining heritage of the town should be acknowledged in the road names for the development.
