THE erection of a 12-metre high telecommunications mast at Yelverton is due to be considered by Dartmoor National Park Authority?s planning committee tomorrow (Friday). The application, by T-Mobile UK Ltd, would mean greater mobile phone coverage in the area. But there have been objections to the proposed mast, which would be situated behind the fire station The parish priest of the Catholic church in Yelverton, adjacent the site, has objected on grounds of visual impact and detriment to the amenity of the clergy and parishioners. And two residents living nearby have similar fears ? they are also concerned about the health issues raised by living close to such a mast. The planning committee will be told the proposed mast and associated ground-based equipment would be less intrusive then the present, 15-metre mast. Extending the existing mast would also make the structure more visible. Planning officers also consider that perceived health fears in respect of radiation from masts ?should not be an over-riding reason to refuse planning permission for new masts?. The application is being recommended for approval.
