NEW recruits are being sought to join an exciting new girls' football team in Tavistock this season.
Manager Sue Hammond has lost some of her Under 11 players due to a change in age groups in the league — and she wants to encourage girls to join the new team.
'I've got seven players but I really want ten — I just need three more,' said Sue.
The team has full kit, thanks to an Awards for All grant, and a busy fixture list within the Ocean League.
Sue said: 'It's a really good opportunity for girls to play against girls which is nice. Football is very good for co-ordination skills, it's good for learning about teamwork and it's so much fun.
'If I'd had the opportunity at this age, I would have jumped at it!'
Sue is a fully qualified FA coach and the Under 11 and Under 14 teams will be affiliated to Tavistock Ladies' Football Club.
She hopes there will be a 'natural progression' through the age groups which will benefit the adult side in the future.
'It's something to build on,' said Sue.
At present, the team practises in the Meadows at 5pm for an hour on Wednesdays. As the evenings draw in, alternative facilities will be booked.
This season the home pitch will be at Tamarside, but Sue said as soon as the mini soccer pitches at Crowndale are completed, the team will play all home matches in Tavistock.
Any girls who would like to join Tavistock Girls' Football Club are welcome to come along to training and give it a try. For matches, all they need are football boots and shinpads, as kit is provided.
To join the Under 11 side, girls need to be no younger than nine, up to and including year 6 at primary school.
