THE MOORWALK organised by Okehampton's 'Pink Ladies Committee' for Cancer Research will be held this year on Sunday June 3. The themed walk of either six or 13 miles length will start at 11 am from Okehampton Rugby Club — and entrants can choose which length walk they want to do on the day. The crossed pink ribbon is the breast cancer symbol and people are being encouraged to make pink the colour of the Moorwalk — many people have already signed up for the event from all over the county. Debs Crome from South Zeal, who took part in last year's event, said: 'I would urge people to sign up for Moorwalk and help raise funds for breast cancer research. 'Me and my friends had a brilliant time last year, dressing up in pink, and joining in the walk with people of all ages. We thoroughly enjoyed the day; the atmosphere is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone.' Last year the event raised more than £18,000 in sponsorship and this money has been used for cancer research and for clinical trials taking place at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. The charity is hoping to attract 500 walkers this year and stresses that absolutely anyone is welcome to sign up and join in all the fun. Cancer Research Area support manager Sylvia Arlett, said: 'We are delighted with the response we have had so far. 'We are hoping that there are still a lot more people out there who will help us raise money to fight breast cancer whilst having an enjoyable time, so please pick up the phone and call 01392 822160 or email [email protected]">[email protected] for an application form.' Each year 42,000 women in the UK and 11,000 in the South West are diagnosed with breast cancer and one in nine women in the UK will develop the disease at some point in their lives. Cancer Research UK is the leading funder of breast cancer research in the UK, spending £25-million last year on this form of cancer alone.
