THE Pimple, that historic landmark perched on the hill above Tavistock, has been bought — by a mystery buyer.
The building, designed by famous architect Edward Lutyens, was sold by South West Water recently for an undisclosed sum.
Stephen Swain, spokesman for South West Water, said: 'The owner didn't want their name disclosed but we are pleased it has happened like this — the site will remain there for the enjoyment of local people as it has done for many years.'
The water authority originally offered The Pimple to Tavistock Town Council, which turned it down. The new owner has written to councillors informing them of the purchase.
His (or her) letter states: 'My reasons for purchasing this well-loved and Listed landmark are purely personal, but suffice to say that my family lived in that area of the South West for over 400 years.
'I have no intention of doing anything to The Pimple, other than maintaining it, and trust that the people of Tavistock and those who visit will continue to enjoy the magnificent landscape and natural beauty of Dartmoor.'
Councillors at their meeting last week agreed to write to the owner, thanking him (or her) for such a public spirited gesture.
