PUPILS from Whitchurch Community Primary school took part in a colouring competition for Blood Transfusion Awareness Week last month. All the children were given a 'Billy Blood Drop' picture to colour and return, for the week from April 23 to 27. For the week, staff, at Plymouth Hospital's NHS Trust used the campaign to inform patients and the public about the benefits and relative risks of blood transfusion, the alternatives to donor blood and choices patients may have, and ways in which patients can contribute to the safety of their transfusion. The trust's specialist transfusion team at Derriford Hospital had a stand in the main entrance of Derriford Hospital all week. The winners from the school were, in each age group, given a cuddly 'Billy Blood Drop' prize, and had their pictures displayed on the special stand at the main entrance to the hospital.
