A POIGNANT fundraising evening at the Taw River Inn in Sticklepath has raised thousands of pounds for charity.

On June 9, Liz Higgins died of cancer. She worked at the Taw River Inn for a number of years, and a 50th birthday party had been organised to take place at the pub the day after her birthday on July 25.

Following her death, Paul and Sue Jones, who run the pub, and their son George, turned the party into a cancer research charity night in memory of Liz and other local people who have been affected by cancer or lost loved ones.

On the night, a wonderful £2,655 was raised, including a donation of over £500 by Trevor Howard, who dyed his hair and beard pink.

Combined with money donated at Liz's funeral, £3,976.25 was raised for Cancer Research UK.

The team at the pub expressed thanks to everyone who made donations, supported the cancer research charity evening, including businesses who made donations for the prize draw.

On Saturday, November 2, the pub presented a cheque to Penny Woodman from Cancer Research UK at their hallowe'en party.

The party was held to celebrate Paul and Sue Jones' 15th year running the pub.

On the night, locals expressed their thanks to Sue, Paul and George for their hard work running the pub and providing a warm welcome.
