A BERE Alston-based care home is celebrating after being recognised as an Investor In People. West View Residential Home has demonstrated a clear commitment to training and development, providing its staff with the skills to deliver the 24-hour care needed to help residents enjoy their senior years. The home opened in 1977 and has an excellent reputation with its clients, families and GPs, helping it consistently to maintain a 100% occupancy rate. Managing director Trevor Atkinson, who owns the home with his wife Jenny, said: ?We are all very pleased to be recognised as an Investor in People. ?The Investors in People programme has really spurred everyone on to be that much better by providing us with the guidelines and support we needed to improve on existing training and development programmes.? West View has a staff of 44, including Mr Atkinson and assistant managers Eleanor Ralph, in charge of care services, and Diane Falvey, responsible for administration. A number of in-house training programmes are conducted to help staff understand the role they play in the delivery of quality care, including support for relatives. West View also operates an NVQ programme, providing staff with opportunities to gain qualifications in care and care management. Other training opportunities are linked to external qualifications such as health and safety, food hygiene, first aid, fire safety and manual handling. As one member of staff said during the Investors in People assessment: ?Through the NVQ training I?ve learnt that good care isn?t always about doing everything for the residents. Sometimes you?ve got to stand back and allow people the dignity of doing things for themselves.? West View, trading as Peninsula Care Ltd, was supported towards Investors in people recognition by Business Link for Devon and Cornwall.
