Carlsberg South Western League
Tavistock 4
Penryn 2
Probably the finest half-hour of football seen at Langsford Park is how numerous supporters described the opening salvo that a well-balanced Lambs heaped on their Cornish visitors.
Fast flowing football, played to feet until the penultimate ball, saw Tavistock go in front in the eleventh minute. James Cole threaded the ball through to Steve Daymond who set up Chris Gott. His first-time header richoted off the crossbar only for the alert Daymond to rattle home the rebound from seven yards.
Two minutes later it was Gott again who picked up the ball from skipper Nathan Blamey, crossed into the area where man of the match Craig Hodge rose majestically to head home and put the Lambs two up.
Two more Gott opportunities went begging before Hodge repeated the feat in the 19th minute, rising to nod in James Cole's pinpoint cross.
It was beginning to look like a cricket score was on the cards when first Gott and then Hodge narrowly missed opportunities to extend the lead. Daymond appeared to relish taking on the Penryn full back and numerous further scoring chances were disregarded. As often happens, seconds before the break Tavistock's lead was reduced.
The second half was a different affair with the Cornishmen at times running the show and leaving head-scratching followers of the Lambs' fortunes perplexed.
In the 72nd minute Penryn scored again when Tim Hooper bent the ball past Andy Mead's in the Lambs goal. A flurry of Tavistock substitutions settled matters, and with just two minutes on the clock, Blamey collected a Hodge pass to sidefoot Tavistock two goals clear.
A good win that sees the Lambs leapfrog their visitors in the table and if the local lads continue to believe in their ability there will be few sides looking to come to Langsford Park this season.
