A RECORD-breaking 1,192 cyclists took to the rugged terrain and hills of Dartmoor for the Tour de Moor to raise money for St Luke's Hospice, Plymouth. Now in its fifth year, the tour departed from Harrowbeer Airfield, Yelverton, with cyclists given a choice of 15-miles or a challenging 35-mile hill climb to Princetown and back. Although not promoted as a race, second across the line was Shamus McCaffery from Princetown. Among the cyclists was Tyler Tomes, who last year was unable to enter the Tour De Moor as he was too young and instead completed a 15-mile cycle ride from Coypool in Plymouth to Tavistock, raising £1,000 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research in the process. Tyler, a Bere Alston Primary School pupil, was over the moon to be able to compete the challenging 15-mile cycle on Sunday. Tyler cycled with his father Pete Tomes and helped raise £250 for St Luke's Hospice. Pete said: 'Tyler did really well. The Tour De Moor is all off road with steep hills, and was around 17-miles in total and Tyler did not moan once! He had fantastic support from other cyclists, and I am really proud of him.' With the highest number of cyclists turning out in the event's five year history, events fundraiser at St Luke's Emma Winter said: 'To reach a five year high is fantastic. 'It was such a great day, with everyone from a nine-year-old to our eldest at 79 taking part and raising money for our patients. 'We are blessed with such a great location on our doorstep which makes this event not only one of the best around, but probably one of the most challenging with the hills and the tough terrain.' It is estimated the Tour de Moor will raise more than £100,000 for St Luke's enabling the charity to provide free end of life care to local people at home, in hospital and the hospice.
