PEACE activist Bruce Kent will be in Tavistock next week, to address a public meeting next Tuesday (January 14) spelling out the case against war with Iraq.
Mr Kent is vice-president of CND ?the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament ? vice-president of Pax Christi, president of the International Peace Bureau and chair of the Movement for the Abolition of War.
The meeting has been organised by Tavistock Peace Action Group, a non-party political group which meets regularly to discuss issues of conflict which arise around the world, and Tavistock College Amnesty Group.
Margaret Quinn, co-ordinator of the peace action group, said they were delighted such a well-known and highly respected figure as Bruce Kent had agreed to visit Tavistock to argue the case for peace through justice and against war on Iraq.
?The meeting is open to all the public regardless of their views on the possibility of war on Iraq. We hope for a good attendance from the people of Tavistock and for a lively debate around the issues discussed by Bruce Kent,? she added.
Tavistock Peace Action Group is planning a series of activities following on from the public meeting. They will meet West Devon and Torridge MP John Burnett on Friday, January 31, and the following day (February 1) they will be running an information stall in Tavistock Pannier Market. On Saturday, February 15, members of the group will be attending a national anti-war demonstration in London.
The meeting will be held in Tavistock Community College Refectory at 7.30pm, on Tuesday, January 14, and all members of the public are welcome. It will be chaired by Gill Gorbutt, a former mayor of Tavistock.
