AN appeal has been launched by the trustees of St James?s Chapel in Okehampton, who wish to promote the town centre building as a place for prayer.
The Rev Stephen Cook, team rector for Okehampton, said St James?s was unusual, in that it was only one of eight ?mayoral chapels? in the country, owned not just by the Church of England but also by the people of Okehampton.
It is open during office hours, enabling people to go in and find a peaceful place for prayer.
Mr Cook said: ?The trustees would like to promote its use for prayer and are proposing putting in a votive candle stand, so that people who go in can light a candle as well. It would be like the ones you see in cathedrals.
?They are very short of funds and are wondering if someone would like to donate a stand in memory of a loved one.
?It?s a universal thing, lighting a candle, and I think it?s the sort of thing people might like to give to ? it would certainly be there for a long time.?
Mr Cook said the approximate cost of a candle stand would be £450.
