The Dartmoor Partnership, an organisation tasked with promoting sustainable tourism and trade on Dartmoor, is speaking out in support of its local post offices. The partnership, based in Princetown, comprises West Devon Borough Council, Dartmoor National Park Authority and the former Dartmoor Tourist Association and boasts in excess of 615 local businesses as its members. As an organisation that promotes local business, local spend and the thriving tourism industry on Dartmoor, it feels it should stand up and be counted on the issue. The partnership is lending its support to West Devon MP, Geoffrey Cox's 'Save our Post Office' campaign and has already lodged its outrage with Network Change, at the number of post office closures planned across the region. Jess Whistance of The Dartmoor Partnership, said: 'The Post Offices on Dartmoor provide a service and community hub that is simply vital to many of its local people. Often, the post office is the only means of access to pensions, savings, post, communication and essential household and convenience goods. Many elderly residents will soon have to travel distances to reach amenities that were previously provided for by their local post office. I am appalled that such an integral part of community life is being phased out, despite the outrage of the general public and the genuine need for this service to continue.' Network Change is now in the consultation period which lasts until July 1 2008. Jess added: 'It is not too late to save your post office but public support is needed to make it happen. If you want to stand up against the closures, log onto the Post Office website, and click on network "change programme" followed by "current public consultations." The more people that express their support, the stronger position we will be in to halt further closures of this vital resource.'
