Plymouth Parkway 4

Callington Town 3

WITH the rebuilding programme continuing apace, Callington were unlucky not to leave the Tamar Valley ground with at least a share of the points on Saturday.

Twice they had the advantage but on each occasion Parkway came back and eventually won the game with the final goal in the 88th minute.

Gary Smith broke the deadlock on 18 minutes after heading home from a Geoff Battams cross. Neil Willmott equalised almost directly afterwards only for Gary Williams to head the visitors into a half-time lead that could and should have been more than the 2-1 scoreline.

John Trim equalised for the home side on the hour then Paul Ginter headed them into the lead.

Back came Callington with Andy Treble firing home from the penalty spot after Chris Gerry had been upended but the last word went to Parkway when Andy Roberts fired home the winner late on to secure the points.

CALLINGTON may have lost this match but injuries meant seven players had to pull out in the 24 hours before it. Town's squad was only 11-strong until, losing one to injury, they showed why the future of Callington Town is looking rosy.

Town manager Dave Rider is no stranger to having to re-arrange his team on the day of the match, but even for him, the amount of people ringing up with injuries took him aback.

But his charges, all but three of whom were under 20, rose to the occasion magnificently to take the game to leaders Bere Alston.

With the wind and hail at their backs in the first half, Bere should have dominated and did score two goals, but Callington could have found the net themselves but for some wayward finishing.

When influential midfielder Matt Reid limped off after 25 minutes with a re-occurence of a leg injury, the ten men did not give up.

Early in the second half, Adam Burgoyne let rip with a ferocious shot that found the far corner of the opposition net to reduce the arrears. Worse was to follow for the now faltering visitors as Andy Shorten beat the keeper to a loose ball to net the equaliser on the hour.

Bere went back in front then came the moment that changed the shape of the game. Darren Woolley took an indirect free kick 50 yards out and just inside his own half. It deceived both sets of players and the Bere keeper watched in horror as he appeared to brush the ball as it went over his head into the net.

The Callington players celebrated only to be cut short when the referee, on the advice of the linesman, decided the keeper had not touched the ball and the goal was disallowed.

For the first time, the Callington heads dropped and Bere took advantage to net two goals to secure the points to close in on the division championship.
