WITH reference to your headline (March 10) regarding car parking fees. The meeting on March 7 was attended by a number of residents and traders who, although sympathetic to the problems facing the borough council, were unanimously opposed to any rise and all agreed that it was very unfair to continually target the motorist.. At the risk of sounding cynical, I can only think that the reasoning is either (1) because the hostility to the proposed 20p hike caused its withdrawal, a small rise of 0.5p this year will be gratefully accepted and then perhaps a possible 15p rise next year won?t seem so bad! Or (2) as the machines do not give change, (why not?) at 85p, it is hoped that many people will just put in a £1 coin. My suggestion for a half hour charge at the Somerfield car park to fall in line with that at Waitrose in Okehampton appears to have been ignored, presumably because the motorist/shopper there is seen as a captive market. One of my questions at the meeting was what will happen in future years if the council has a shorfall, will parking charges continue to increase each and every year until such time it reaches £2 or more per hour and people will no longer want to visit or shop in Tavistock? It is quite clear that these annual increases cannot be sustained and I hope the West Devon Borough Council will find time to consider a number of proposals put to them at that meeting.
