PARENTS of local primary school children learned of the proposed improvements at Okehampton College when they visited for an open day recently.

Principal Chris Powell addressed parents, whose children will be joining the college next year, in the Octagon Theatre, offering a clear picture of the immense changes being planned for with the new multi-million technology block and pursuit of Technology College status.

After the presentation, parents were given a tour of the college where they were able to meet many staff and view the facilities.

Earlier in the day they visited classrooms, joining in with lessons and discussed with teachers the latest teaching methods. Help was given by young college students who acted both as guides and advisors, giving open and honest advice on the college.

Many parents who had been at the college themselves expressed delight at the changes and improvements already made and several wished to sign up to start learning all over again.

In the summer, Year 6 primary school children have the chance of spending several days at the college, getting a taste of lessons, meeting their tutors-to-be and using the sporting facilities.

'Okehampton College is fast expanding with over 1,300 students this year and numbers set to increase for the next few years,' said Mr Powell.

'With the much improved facilities bigger does mean better. Okehampton College is all about achievement — we have it writ large in all we do here.'
