IN response to Mr Steve Dey's letter, (Times, November 29) I would like to make the following points:-

Bank Square, Tavistock, was re-lined in white paint at Easter this year. Prior to that time, we were unable to stop customers from parking in the corner of the car park because none of the spaces were clearly marked.

After the re-lining work was carried out we issued warning notices to cars parking in the corner, of the changes, so nobody received a fine for four weeks. It is easy, when you are not standing in Bank Square car park, to say that the area should be marked 'No Parking'. However, when you actually drive into the car park, it is obvious, due to its size, that parking in the corner will obstruct cars parked in the marked bays on the opposite corner. In addition, the white lines make it quite clear where the parking bays are.

Following several complaints, we decided to paint 'No Parking' on the surface of the car park in the area concerned. This is to be carried out purely because there are those drivers who have no consideration for other motorists.

Bank Square is one of our most attractive car parks as the surface is made up entirely of bricks placed in an attractive pattern. It's a great pity that painting on the surface will obviously spoil this.

Mr Dey says that painting 'No Parking' on the surface of the car park requires a committee decision. I can categorically say that painting this sign does not require a committee decision.
