The painting, by local artist Maria Croft, was spotted by Tavistock town crier, Bob Rose, at the recent art exhibition. Bob, who had been thinking of giving something back to the town in return for all the support he had received over the past five years, managed to persuade the artist to part with the picture, which he presented to Tavistock mayor, Cllr Norma Woodcock, before last Tuesday's council meeting.
Cllr Woodcock, giving thanks for the gesture, described the painting as 'another page in Tavistock's history'.
Artist Maria Croft said she was 'absolutely delighted' at the presentation. 'It couldn't possibly have a better home,' she said. Maria said she liked to paint 'the unusual' and said Tavistock, with its many traditions, inspired her with many ideas.
