EVERY year Lions Clubs International sponsor a children's poster competition — this year the theme is 'The Power of Peace'.

It is an international competition with a fantastic prize — a trip to the award ceremony at Lion's Day with the United Nations in New York, and a cash award of more than £1000! Entrants have to be eleven, 12 or 13 years of age on November 15.

The Tavistock Lions Club organises its own junior competition so that younger children can participate and a large number of local schools are now involved.

Organiser, Lion Alan Wroath, said: 'We will submit the best poster from an artist in the right age group for the international competition — so who knows? Someone from Tavistock may be flying out to New York! But there will be lots of prizes and certificates for younger children in their own schools and in the area.'

The presentation evening for the poster competition will be part of Carnival week and be held in the Parish Centre at 6pm on Thursday July 16 and the following week, there will be an exhibition of the posters in the Tavistock Library.

Anyone between the ages of eight and 13 who would like to take part should contact Alan Wroath for more details by writing to 19 Glanville Road, Tavistock PL19 0EB. The closing date is Friday June 19.
