Western Counties West

Okehampton 19

Paignton 16

THOSE who had already written Okes obituaries for this league encounter had the words put where they belong.

Paignton, who had only lost four league games this season, which included a home defeat by Okes, had to suffer their fifth reversal from a side that would not give in.

Alford opened the scoring with a 60-metre break following solid midfield defence, that broke down a Paignton attack. Searle added the conversion and was unlucky not to score with two penalty chances in the opening minute.

As usual, Okes did not take their chances and should have put the game away before Merrick touched down in the corner where Ward converted.

It was 7-7 at half-time. Fast ball produced by the pack allowed Vick to score, with Searle converting.

Instead of going on to dominate Okes sat back and attempted to defend their lead. To their credit the visitors could not score a try, though Ward kicked three penalties to put his side 16-14 up with minutes to go.

By this time the ageing Paignton had run out of gas and Okes, seeing that victory was there, put on the pressure.

Ash and Bickle drove for the line. Further quick ball sent Reddaway in for a debut try.

Okes then controlled the kick-off and played out time for the visitors from the coast to return empty-handed.
