TAVISTOCK College is well on its way to purchasing its own solar panel installation, thanks to the fantastic fundraising efforts of staff, students and the local community. The project to raise £20,000 for solar panels is being supported by Solar Schools, part of the government backed 10:10 organisation, which aims to reduce carbon emissions in public and private organisations. Solar Schools provides support to schools and colleges throughout the country who are raising money for solar panels, by offering support and advice on fund raising ideas, applications for grants and providing facilities for on-line donations. Linda Coe, premises manager at the college, said: 'So far we've raised over £4,000 and have a packed schedule of fund raising events coming up. 'Come along to our duck race to be held in the Meadows on July 11 at 6pm — buy your duck on the night or from Morrisons on Friday, July 4. Students can buy ducks at the college every Wednesday before the big race!' For the more energetic a summer stroll has been organised for Friday, July 18. Register at the college for 6pm start and follow the route to Gem Bridge and back. Light refreshments will be available at Gem Bridge. The route is pushchair friendly so all the family can join in. Entry fee is £5 per adult, children and dogs are free. Linda said: 'The solar panels are only part of a much wider school campaign to make the college more sustainable and ensure that Tavistock College staff and students are at the forefront of environmental and sustainable initiatives.'
