Redruth Reserves 15

TAVISTOCK were due to play Tamar Saracens in the third round of the Powergen Junior Vase last Saturday but received a bye when Saracens withdrew at the last moment.

Tavistock did however pick up the Redruth fixture at late notice and knew they would have to be on good form when facing the reserves of a club whose first fifteen are four leagues higher in the national structure.

Tavistock started badly allowing Redruth to score a try via Ben Priddy in the first few minutes of the game.

But gradually the Tavistock pack took control and with the scrum and lineout functioning well this provided the Tavistock backs with good possession with which to test their opposite numbers.

The lineout was particularly pleasing, as this area of the game has not functioned well in recent weeks.

But on Saturday Tavistock saw hooker Matt Martin combining well with the lineout jumpers to provide good clean possession.

Fly half Josh Sutton opened the Tavistock scoring with a penalty after fifteen minutes when Redruth were penalised for offside.

Then full back Chris Steer scored a try wide out, which was unconverted, after the ball had been spun wide by the Tavistock backs. Redruth then got back into the game via their second try from Paul Fuca to take a 10-8 lead as half time approached.

Just before half time Tavistock regained the lead.

The Redruth backs spilled the ball in midfield, flanker Paul Greenhill hacked the ball through the Reds? defence and fly half Josh Sutton finished off the attack by claiming the try that he also converted.

Just after half time Tavistock increased their lead when Richard intercepted a wayward pass, chipped the defence and raced onto the ball to claim the try.

A further Tavistock try was scored by wing Adam Bridgewater and Josh Sutton converted both tries.

Redruth had the final word in scoring their third try ? this time from Jim Crewden, wide out on the Tavistock left.

All in all this game saw a further improvement in the Tavistock performance and built on the victory the previous week at home to Okehampton.

On Saturday Tavistock are back in league action and are at home to Bideford. Kick off 2:30pm.
