St Just . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 16pts
TAVISTOCK won their first league outing of the season in some style at Sandy Park on Saturday.
Playing their first game in the Cornwall and Devon League since last season?s promotion, they were paired with St Just who had entered the league from the opposite direction.
Tavistock were unsure what to expect from a side who had been two leagues higher last term but found they had the pace and power to counter anything St Just threw at them.
The opening exchanges were keenly contested but gradually the Tavistock forwards took control with the front row of the scrum being particularly impressive in the set pieces. This control allowed the Tavistock backs plenty of clean quick possession for them to start testing the St Just defence.
On twenty minutes Tavistock opened the scoring after Duncan Law made an outside break, a pass to skipper Lee Greatrex split the defence and Lee fed fly half Josh Sutton who scored a well worked try.
Skipper Greatrex was soon in the action again breaking along the blindside channel to score an individual try wide out on the right. Lee then got a second try and Josh Sutton converted to give Tavistock a seventeen point lead as halftime approached.
Tavistock should have extended that lead just before the end of the half when their forwards, with Paul Greenhill and Tom Dawe to the fore, battered the opposition line but sound defence and some sloppy ball retention allowed St Just to escape.
The beginning of the second half saw St Just fight back when they scored a converted try and three penalty goals in fifteen minutes. First a wicked bounce beat Tavistock fullback Alex Hudson and winger Maddern scored a try, full back Barnes converted and added three penalty goals through some indiscipline by Tavistock.
At this stage Tavistock used their replacements to bring on fresh legs in the form of Steve Rush in the front row, Lee Easton in the second row and Robin Weldon in the backs. This provided the platform for Tavistock skipper Lee Greatrex to get the show back on the road with his third try of the game. This settled Tavistock nerves and allowed them to reassert control.
A fifth try was added after a great run from winger Joe Lane was supported by number eight, Jude Rotton who crashed over for a try. The final try of the game was scored appropriately by centre Duncan Law who had a storming game in both attack and defence. Fly half Josh Sutton converted two of the second half tries.
On Saturday Tavistock travel in the league to old adversaries Sidmouth for a 3:00pm kick off.
