TAVISTOCK'S Town Crier has a bright and modern new uniform. David Turner and his consort Rosemary Turner have left the dull colours of previous uniforms and will parade in bright colours based on Tavistock's coat of arms.

David's jacket and trousers were made by David Cooper of Coopers Visiting Taylors in Postbridge and his waistcoat and cravat by former art teacher at Tavistock College Anne Wroath.

Tavistock Town Council made a grant for the new uniforms but David and Rosemary were mindful not to use all the money available because of the current economic situation.

The couple bought buttons for the coats and waistcoat themselves, which bear the town crest on each button. Rosemary said: 'We designed the uniform with Anne and David. It needed updating. Now the uniform is practical, modern but still quite traditional.'

The town crier is available in his new regalia for any event in the town, from charity and business events to parties and weddings.
